Poul Kjærholm

"I am trying to express the very language of the materials themselves."
Poul Kjærholm

About Poul Kjærholm. Poul Kjærholm was my father. He was born 1929 in Øster Vrå in Vendsyssel, northern Jutland.

He died much to soon in 1980, but not before he had designed some of Scandinavia's - even the world's most beautiful pieces of furniture. He was one of the foremost representatives of Scandinavian furniture tradition - but he belonged to the whole world because he refused to settle for Nordic self-sufficiency. As a skilled cabinet-maker he, more than anybody else, had learned that if the detail was not in order, the rest didn't matter much. This followed him all through his career. Heavily inspired by the artist Piet Mondrian and the architects Gerrit Rietveld and Mies van der Rohe his pieces are imbued with love for clarity, perfection and detail.

The furniture that my father created and which I now produce are all beautiful examples of this. And to have the possibility to do so makes me very proud.
